Are you coming from abroad or interested in purchasing a new mobile and want to check how much PTA tax applies to the device?

We developed this PTA tax calculator using the latest information so you can find the accurate tax for new purchases.

What is PTA Tax?

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) imposes a tax on importing new and used mobile phones into Pakistan. The PTA requires payment of this tax to register a phone for use on local mobile networks. This tax is usually based on the phone’s value.

What Makes Up Your PTA Tax

PTA tax is not a single charge. It is a combination of different federal taxes collected by the FBR, not by the PTA. The PTA only checks your phone's IMEI number and blocks it if you don't register it. Here is what your total tax is made up of.

Customs Duty: Smartphones are exempt from this. Only basic or feature phones pay a small fixed customs duty.

Regulatory Duty: This is a fixed amount based on your phone's C&F value slab. As per SRO 1064(I)/2026, it was reduced by around 20% this year.

Sales Tax: This is charged under the Sales Tax Act, 1990. It is the only percentage based charge, so it is also the only amount that changes when the dollar rate goes up or down.

Income Tax (Section 148): This applies only when you register with a CNIC. If you bring the phone yourself on a passport within 60 days, you don't pay this tax. That is the main reason passport registration is cheaper.

Mobile Levy: This is a one time charge for registering your handset on the networks. It is fixed according to your phone's price bracket.

How to Check if Your Phone is PTA Approved?

Before paying any tax, you should check your phone's status. First, get your IMEI number by dialing *#06#. You can also find it on the box or in your phone settings. If your phone has two SIM slots, it will have two IMEI numbers, and both need registration. After that, you can check the status in any of these ways.

  1. Send your 15 digit IMEI number to 8484 in an SMS.
  2. Check it on the DIRBS portal at dirbs.pta.gov.pk.
  3. Use the PTA DVS mobile app.

If the result shows "compliant", your phone is fine. "Non compliant" means you still have to pay tax, and "blocked" means the phone may be stolen or its IMEI is duplicated

PTA Tax Rates by Phone Value (2026-27)

These are the main value based charges that make up your PTA tax. The brackets use your phone's C&F value in US dollars. Customs duty is not shown as a column because smartphones are exempt from it, while basic phones pay a flat Rs 250.

Passport Registration (Applied Within 60 Days of Arrival)

C&F Value (USD)Regulatory DutySales TaxHandset LevyIncome Tax (Sec 148)
Up to $30Rs. 24018%Rs. 100Exempt

$350 to $500Rs. 12,00018%Rs. 4,000Exempt
Above $500Rs. 17,60025%Rs. 8,000+Exempt

On the passport route, the income tax under Section 148 is not charged. This is the main reason passport registration costs less than CNIC.

CNIC Registration

C&F Value (USD)Regulatory DutySales TaxHandset LevyIncome Tax (Sec 148)
Up to $30Rs. 24018%Rs. 100Rs. 100
$30 to $100Rs. 2,40018%Rs. 200Rs. 100
$100 to $200Rs. 6,00018%Rs. 200Rs. 930

Above $500Rs. 17,60025%Rs. 8,000+Rs. 11,500

Sales tax is the only percentage in the table, so it is the only figure that changes when the dollar rate moves. Note that once the value crosses $500, the 25% rate applies to the full value, not just the part above $500. A non filer registering on a CNIC can pay up to 100% extra on the income tax column, but that amount is adjustable in the annual return.

The $500 Sales Tax Jump

There is an important point at the $500 value mark. Once your phone's C&F value crosses $500, the sales tax rate increases from 18% to 25%. And this higher rate applies to the full value of the phone, not just the amount above $500. So a phone worth $490 and a phone worth $600 can have a much bigger tax difference than you expect. If your phone value is near $500, always check the exact tax first.

Filer vs Non Filer Tax Difference

Your filer status does not change most of the taxes. The regulatory duty, sales tax, and mobile levy are the same whether you are a filer or a non filer. The only difference comes on the CNIC route in the income tax under Section 148. As per the Tenth Schedule of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, non filers can pay up to 100% extra on this income tax. But the good news is that this amount is adjustable in your annual income tax return, so filers can recover it later.

Free Registration for Overseas Visitors (120 Days)

If you are a foreign national or an overseas Pakistani visiting for a short time, you can register one phone temporarily and pay no tax at all. This temporary registration is linked to one SIM you choose, and it stays valid for 120 days. After that, the phone gets blocked. You can select the "Temporary Registration" option on the DIRBS portal. This is a good option for travelers who are not going to use the phone in Pakistan for a long time.

Important Things to Remember Before Paying

There are a few things you should keep in mind before you pay your PTA tax.

  1. Your PSID expires in 7 days. After you generate the payment slip, you have to pay it within a week, or the application gets deleted and you have to start again.
  2. You get 60 days from the day you insert your SIM before the phone is blocked. Going abroad and coming back does not reset these days.
  3. Used phones that you bring yourself are valued on the same list as new phones. There is no extra discount for old phones on the passport route.
  4. Very new models may not have an official value yet. In that case, simply enter the price from your own customs paper into the calculator.
